Pugs aren’t generally considered the smartest or easiest dogs to train. But, they can still learn basic skills like toilet training and good manners. The most effective way to do this is to use positive reinforcement training techniques without strength. Let’s take a closer look at the question on everyone’s lips: are Pugs smart? Or Are pugs the dumbest dogs?

    Are Pugs Smart?

We all need to train our dogs to use the toilet in the right place, come back to us when called, and greet people politely and so on. Some people like to take it a step further and teach their dog tricks, dog sports, or the skills to become a working therapy dog.

    Intelligence in Dogs

Intelligence in dogs is partly genetic and hereditary. This is why humans were able to create super intelligent working dogs through selective breeding. Hereditary intelligence in dogs is also polygenic, which means there are a lot of different genes that contribute to it.

So while the Pug might not have inherited as much innate intelligence as a Border collie, that doesn’t mean that, they are completely devoid of genetic intelligence. Canine intelligence also varies with age. Dogs’ ability to remember new objects or the location of objects often declines as they age. With More information it is important.

    Types of Intelligence in Dogs

We know that some people might automatically think ‘no’ when asked ‘are Pugs smart?’ But whether or not a Pug is smart doesn’t come down to their ability to learn tricks or commands. Some dogs that are not known to be easy to train nonetheless have excellent problem-solving skills (the playful Siberian Husky is a frequently cited example). And other dogs are naturally good at fulfilling the purpose for which they were bred, even without formal training. The Pug is a prime example.

    How Smart Are Pugs?

There are records of pugs dating back several hundred years. And they have always, always been companion dogs first to the Chinese aristocracy, and now all over the world. To make them excellent companion dogs, breeders have chosen the sweetest, caring, and loving individuals as bulls and dams for the next generation. So now modern Pugs have a strong intrinsic desire to seek out human society and interact with us. People who get a Pug for companionship are likely to be in awe of how they intuitively offer affection when they want it, or how kind they love guests. In fact, they only do what comes to them instinctively. But it can be interpreted as a kind of context dependent intelligence.

What Is The IQ Of A Pug?

Canine intelligence cannot easily be compared to human intelligence. For example, dogs aren’t as good at applying problem-solving skills learned from task to task like we are. Additionally, human IQ tests attempt to measure intelligence in reasoning and problem solving. That’s not really where the Pug is good at anyway. It is therefore impossible to quantify how Smart Pugs use an IQ score.

How Intelligent Are Pugs Compared To Other Dogs?

Pug’s intelligence compared to other dogs depends a lot on the type of intelligence you are measuring. An attempt to rank dog breeds by working on intelligence and obedience placed Pugs in the 108th position – just in the bottom 40. This is in part because there is a plot of the working races above them, which were races to perform specific jobs and tasks.
